Broken Places

No Place Like Home

The aging of America and alternatives to nursing home care for the frail elderly.

Experts estimate that one-third of the population now living in nursing homes would not need to be there if alternative services were more widely available. This documentary vividly illustrates several alternatives to institutionalizing the elderly.

One alternative involves having a team of medical professionals visit the frail elderly at home. Another provides transportation for elderly citizens to a senior center where they can receive health care and other support services. In a rural area, family members are trained in home health care. In an urban setting, congregate housing has special facilities built in to serve the needs of older residents. With science enabling people to live longer, we must ensure that longer lives are worth living.
