To What End?

The debate over how the United States can provide national security in the nuclear age.

To What End? illustrates four different views of how the U.S. could reduce the risk of nuclear war while maintaining national security. The documentary examines whether national security depends on 1) peace through strength; 2) arms control; 3) ballistic missile defense; or 4) nuclear disarmament. The four policy directions are presented in interviews with leading experts, policy makers, government officials, and scientists, including nuclear physicist Edward Teller; Jonathan Schell, author of The Fate of the Earth and The Abolition; Harvard University professor Richard Pipes; and former Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara.
